California schools are facing a growing financial crisis due to the rapidly escalating costs of defending and settling liability claims. Large settlements on catastrophic claims and legal awards on tort claims are on the rise. Carriers are threatening to eliminate or severely restrict coverage for certain types of exposures, and several insurance companies have withdrawn from providing coverage for California schools and municipalities. Public school officials and leaders must come together and develop a plan to help ease the burden of these losses on our schools.
